I am traveling this weekend for my brother’s wedding in Cali, and thought this would be the perfect time to talk about my travel trips, tricks, and essentials! I don’t travel as often (and I sure as hell am not a travel guru!) as I would like, but I feel like I’ve traveled enough to have a routine when I leave home for more than 2-3 days.

I feel like there are a few different types of travelers…

  • The explorers. You have to see all of the well-known monuments and see ALL of the things.
  • The outdoorsy. You love traveling to state parks and hiking, seeing the sites, fishing, and camping. You love unplugging from the rest of the world.
  • The foodies. The most important part of the trip is the food you’re going to be eating, AMIRITE?! The foodies plan their trips around restaurants they’re eating at and takes the most instagram-able food photos EVER.
  • The chillers. The chillers are the travelers who just goes with the flow and does whatever they feel like and will plan their trip each day they get up.

Which traveler are you? We are definitely the explorers and foodies! I plan all of our trips around places we’re visiting and restaurants we’ll be eating at!

Assuming I’ve already taken care of airfare and hotel stay… Here are my tips + tricks for a smooth trip:

Pre-Trip (4-6 weeks prior)

  • Oh, gosh. My Type A personality is about to make a HUGE appearance here. HAHA! Make an itinerary for your trip! Plan out the places you’re going to, people you’re visiting, and places you’re going to eat!
  • If we’re traveling with other people, make sure they’re aware of itinerary and make revisions if needed
  • Pre-purchase tickets to any attractions/events you’re going to attend.

Pre-Trip (2-3 days prior)

  • Arrange a dog-sitter for Pixie and get her groomed. Pack her food, bed, etc.
  • Reserve a parking spot at the airport—we have to drive about 25-30 minutes to the airport, so it’s cheaper for us to park at the airport rather than getting an Uber.
  • Research weather at your destination and plan your outfits accordingly.
  • Don’t forget about your medication and supplements!
  • Withdraw cash from the bank if we need it. Let them know we are traveling so they don’t think our cards were stolen and they freeze our accounts.
  • For safety reasons, I always send my airline itinerary and hotel information to a few family members just in case anything happens.
  • Start packing!

Travel Non-Negotiables

  • Before every trip, the last thing I do is clean my entire house. I LOVE coming home from a trip and being able to enjoy my clean home. Vacuum, mopping, laundry done, dishes done, and my husband usually washes the cars if the weather permits.
  • Trash everything in the house and purge the fridge of anything that may spoil or start stinking while we’re gone
  • Drop off Pixie the day before we leave so I don’t have to worry about her the day we travel
  • Airplane entertainment-A lot of our flights are early morning so I usually sleep on those flights, but if I don’t sleep, I like to read. I bring a book with me and typically have my laptop if I need to get some work done at the airport or on the plane.
  • Invest in some really good headphones!! I have BeatsX Bluetooth headphones that I use in the gym and they’re great for the airplane too. If I have extra room in my backpack, I typically bring my bigger Beats over-ear headphones because those help with noise cancellation.
  • Snacks. You can always count on me to have some intra-flight snack inside my bag. And I buy them at the store or bring them from home because shit at the airport ain’t cheap!
